Community Services
Community Services
Community Service is one of the fundamental pillars of higher education that connects academic knowledge with real social impact. It reflects a university’s moral and civic responsibility to empower communities, enhance well-being, and apply research-based innovations to solve real-world problems. At Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya (MUS), community service programs are managed by the Institute for Research, Innovation, and Community Service (LRIPM) and are designed to integrate education, innovation, and Islamic values in fostering sustainable community development.
Through this program, MUS lecturers and students actively collaborate with both local and international communities to develop creative and impactful solutions. The university’s flagship initiative, the Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata – KKN), enables students to apply their academic knowledge in real community settings. MUS offers a range of community service schemes, including regular KKN, thematic KKN focused on health, education, environment, and entrepreneurship, as well as the International KKN Program. The International KKN has been successfully conducted in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea, where MUS students worked with local communities and partner institutions to promote education, innovation, and social welfare.
In addition, MUS also welcomes inbound international community service programs, one of which was conducted in collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic, where international students joined MUS counterparts in community-based projects in Surabaya. These cross-border engagements promote cultural understanding, leadership, and global collaboration among participants.
Guided by the Muhammadiyah principle of Amar Ma’ruf Nahi Munkar and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly in promoting quality education, poverty reduction, health and well-being, and sustainable communities MUS’s community service initiatives represent a living laboratory for innovation, empathy, and collaboration. Through these programs, MUS continues to cultivate graduates who are not only academically competent but also socially responsible, globally engaged, and dedicated to creating positive change in society.
